There's a story by Edgar Allan Poe, I think, (might be Kafka) this bloke couldn't stand the noise which surrounded him. Be built a noise proof dwelling, but still heard noise. So he deafened himself. Yet he still heard noise. It was the sound of his heart beating. So, he took things to their logical conclusion.
Were we discussing suicide? Two cents.
Back in the 1980's I worked as a Lifeline telephone counsellor. (voluntary, part time, usually at night). The training was pretty good. One of the things really stuck: The common element of suicide is pain, often crushing emotional pain. The Person quite often doesn't really want to die. They just want the pain to end. Their pain is such that they cannot see more than one solution.
