It's just a request. I don't think it crosses a line to ask. I think the words used were "we are pleading"... that sets the tone for the request.
As far as I can tell, it's like boycotting Texas. Boycotting something doesn't cross a line. But it does often require everyday people to make sacrifices. (Like the Montgomery bus boycott). It's not easy. But boycotts are about as civil as it gets.
But this is the first I've heard of this, so maybe I don't understand something.
