History, I believe, will judge it a myth of our day that Trump had control over the Republican Party; the exact opposite is true. It is the Party elites who controlled him. Trump is a master of quid pro quo; he gave the Conservatives in the Senate exactly what they wanted, a wagon train of Federalist society picked judges, no questions asked.
That's why they (secretly) love him; he gets things done that they want done. They will Rinse & Repeat for (just) one more term.
1. No they really don't. One faction thinks they can pull off a win without Trump while others think they can't win without him.
2. I don't agree that Trump wasn't in charge as he went off-script so many times even on judges only to have the Republican party cave into his demands despite objections. He's the monster they lost control of.
3. Yes Trump does get things they want done. But now he's a huge liability and they have a whole group of Trumpist to choose from who don't have his baggage to choose from.
