Walking in my opinion is so much better. Obviously unless you're training for a specific sport that involves running. For general day to day life walking to me is so much safer and enjoyable, plus if you want to get more out of it just walk faster or up a steeper hill.
I've been walking with a few different people from work, with some people it's an enjoyable stroll with others it's been a grueling challenge, so you just get out of it whatever you want to put into it.
Also I've had knee injuries before that have been horrible to recover from so I always stick to whatever is easiest on my knees.
Saying that I've been able to push ridiculous amounts of weight on the leg extension machines at the gym, but I feel with slow weight exercise I can always stop quickly if I feel a twinge of pain and either stop entirely or adjust my position or something.
I don't really know anyone who's active who's over 25 who doesn't have some kind of knee issue so I'm pretty overprotective about my knees.
But also, I just want to say that when it comes to weight loss it's never really made too much of a difference to me what kind of exercise I've done, it's mainly been what diet I'm on. I mean I've always been fairly active, but it hasn't made too much difference if I did long distance cycling, short bouts of HIIT, focused more on weights, just walking or whatever.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.
