If it's not about sex, then, it's about economics, the basis of all organized religion.
How did human civilization arise after a few million years of hunting, scavenging and gathering? Probably due to the discovery of fermentation, and with that, came booze & sex, and the need to keep track of the grain, to store it, to guard it, and to distribute it. Scribes, soldiers, bureaucrats, judges, and with those, priests. Tribal gods, such as Yahweh, became jealous and vengeful -- don't steal the grain, don't have sex with the women of those who guard and distribute the grain, etc.
