Ok, Astreja. Thanks for explaining. Purgatory exists so that those who have at least slight contrition for their sins, even if they were lifelong sins, can go to Purgatory instead of Hell. And since Purgatory is only temporal, everyone who goes there will ultimately end up in Heaven. That's what the Church Fathers held. Some also believed in 50% or more going there and ultimately going to Heaven. It was understood of course that at least a slight degree of contrition for one's sins will be necessary before going even to Purgatory. It is uncertain, but we hope and pray for it. The Mass also exists to pray for the Souls in Purgatory, and also for souls near death, so that they may go at least to Purgatory. After the Reformation, Purgatory was denied and this knowledge and purpose of Purgatory was lost to many, though now some are regaining it by studying the Fathers. But it is uncertain in the final estimation how many will actually go to Purgatory, and through Purgatory, to Heaven. It depends on how many want to, and how many efforts are made. Baptism of course, in Catholic understanding, washes away all sins, and thus allows entrance to Heaven without Purgatory, for souls who die shortly after Baptism without further sins. I don't know how many will be saved, but I certainly hope as many as possible.
