Atheists, the death penalty and abortion...
March 8, 2013 at 8:08 pm
Atheists usually tend to believe in a finite life, does this cause them to believe in the preservation of life, even in the cases of criminals such as murderers? And do you think an "eternity of nothingness" is not 'harsh' enough punishment for the worst offenders? These are arguments I have heard before.
Also, what is your position on abortion?

I'm an atheist that is okay with the death penalty for specific cases. Whether or not it is harsh is irrelevant. It is not a punishment. It is a solution. The same principle applies to prison. It is not a punishment. It is rehabilitation or so we say.
I say fetuses are fair game, but my boyfriend disagrees. Atheists differ on all of these topics, you know.

You think it's fair for you to abort a foetus that your boyfriend wants to keep? Also, why do you think abortions are ok? I assume you also support post-natal abortions.

If a kid's own mother doesn't want it why the hell should I force her to give birth to it?
I have no problem with capital punishment as long as there is no doubt about the guilt of the accused. Our system does not determine that to a sufficiently accurate degree, unfortunately.

What about the sexist gender selection systems that exist in places like India and China. They look at the sex of the embryo, keep if it is male, abort if it is female. Do you think that's perfectly acceptable from your own moral standpoint?

How does this connection take place in your mind?
The only thing which an atheist requires to call him or herself an atheist is a rejection of deities.
Nothing more at all.
If one cherrishes life or not is a decision made by an atheist which is not impacted by his or her atheism because there is no "atheist dogma" demanding a certain position on that subject from them.

an eternity of existing with you is a punishment aswell.
Modern prison systems do not seek punishment but resocialisation and the protection of the public.
punishment for the sake of feeding someones need for revenge or setting a public statement can stay in the medieval era.

It must be legal

I don't really care what Indians and Chinese do to each other. That comes under the heading of "Their Problem."
We have enough of our own.

I don't believe in the death penalty simply because there is no flawless court system and people will always be falsely sentenced.
I do agree with abortion as long as its before the third trimester because I don't feel sympathy for a growth that isn't conscious and doesn't feel pain. Sure its potential life, but so was the load I flushed down the toilet last a night, billions of potential lives in fact, and that's not illegal. I mean I wouldn't have given a shit if I was aborted because I would never have had the ability to give a shit.
