Why would you not believe in free will? We very obviously have free will.

Materialism is deterministic and so doesn't allow for freewill.  There's also interesting philosophical arguments against LFW.

I don't think materialism necessarily requires determinism. But the question intersects with unsolved questions about causality, so is probably a topic for another time.
