Mummification just requires that the squishy/juicy bits be dried out. People in Borneo mummify their dear departed and trot them around town every years.

Just throwing it out there. Maybe they lack squishy bits. I mean, they can really be anything that someone says they are...till we have proof.
And I would imagine that in the great big universe and all the universes beyond, there are different sorts of beings, if they exist at all.
