It's not about culture or even religion.
It's about "placing an alien body between natural bodies".
Turns out the Hebrews were Canaanites all along. Lived with their livestock among the olive trees and vineyards of the hill country to the north of Jerusalem, which became Samaria, and to the south, which became Judah. Some of the latter might have had an interlude in the Nile delta, but they're all, basically, from the West Bank. At some point the tribes federated. Rome did a number on them, but at no time where there zero Hebrews in Palestine.
