Often times, it's about luck and getting yourself out there. If you're someone who is very comfortable staying home all day never going to parties or social hangouts on a regular basis, you are less likely to have any chance of a date/mate compared to someone who does.
But other factors also will give some advantages. For example, being good at picking up on whether someone likes you or not, and being good at sending the right signals. You don't even need to be a charmer in that case, just socially aware.
Another example: not being prone to clinging to people who just don't see you as their type. If, say, you're a "boring average" heterosexual guy, you might have a much better chance with a "boring average girl" instead of that "hot girl next door" and therefore less likely to be "friendzoned".
Of course, being likeable helps as well. If you're not sexy looking, you're not a charmer, you're not super smart, you're not a socializer, you're not exciting, you're not confident, at least have a likeable personality. There will probably be someone who will notice that and end up really liking you. Just don't be creepy, don't be narcissistic, and/or don't be a downer. Some people can get away with being all that, but only if they're sexy looking or super rich or have some other thing going really well for them.
Don't be super picky, don't be self-sabotaging, don't expect people to come to you out of nowhere.
And also, if it helps, just don't "date". "Hang out" with them instead, and enjoy their company, and let things unfold naturally between you two.
