Except when they weren't. Human history is bloody, polytheists and monotheists both. Polytheism can have a sort of built in tolerance for other faiths. "Many gods and so why not yours as well." It doesn't always work out that way though. Even when it does, there's usually a current of "many gods, but mine are the best, the greatest". Cue Rome...lol.
