I need to self-correct a little bit here. As I said before I am not an expert on the subject. But in terms of what the Quran is saying there are several things that need to be known when talking about a mistranslation like “corruption on earth”: There is no such thing and this young man Toomaj Salehi has nothing to do with any of this anyway.
1) There are verses on the “Musfidun” the term in my language is “Bozguncu” (if anyone cares). The good English translation according to me is “Those who spread chaos” / “Those who destroy positive works that are designed to help mankind in general”. To me this is important because in a Course in Miracles it says “Do not underestimate the vengeance of the Ego”. We live in a world where there are forces that are not only harming us, but are out there to destroy us if they get the chance. We can think of right wing extremism. We can think of Big-Oil digging out even more oil and gas while our climate is rapidly changing. We can think of political Islam and / or Chinese-Russian style authoritarianism trying to destabilize the rest of the world to gain more influence (Like the Russian Law they recently voted in Georgia for instance). – You name it – And in a religious context I found a good translation of verses talking about the “Musfidun”: https://www.searchtruth.com/search.php?k...anslator=5 It’s not related to young man making songs about oppressive / tyrannical regimes that are based on lies and misperceptions. 2) There is al Maidah 32 and 33: https://quran.com/al-maidah First there is this famous statement: “That is why We ordained for the Children of Israel that whoever takes a life—unless as a punishment for murder or mischief in the land—it will be as if they killed all of humanity; and whoever saves a life, it will be as if they saved all of humanity.1” (All terrorists should read this before going into action in the name of “Islam”) Than it says: “˹Although˺ Our messengers already came to them with clear proofs, many of them still transgressed afterwards through the land. Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and spread mischief in the land is death, crucifixion, cutting off their hands and feet on opposite sides, or exile from the land.” https://quran.com/al-maidah This is very violent indeed. Again it talks about “Those who spread mischief / those who create trouble / those who are transgressing”. There is this idea of “warning”, it says “After our messengers came to them with clear proofs”. Then there is death, crucifixion, exile. I still believe this is very violent. I think this has to do with the early days of Islam when the Prophet and his believers were trying to maintain themselves among rather savage tribes who were very hostile to his beliefs and his ways of doing things. 3) There is Al-tawbah 5. “As for the polytheists who have honoured every term of their treaty with you and have not supported an enemy against you, honour your treaty with them until the end of its term. Surely Allah loves those who are mindful ˹of Him˺.” “But once the Sacred Months have passed, kill the polytheists ˹who violated their treaties˺ wherever you find them,1 capture them, besiege them, and lie in wait for them on every way. But if they repent, perform prayers, and pay alms-tax, then set them free. Indeed, Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” https://quran.com/at-tawbah This is the part that needs self-correction. This is the part again where is talks about sixth century Arabs. These were war-like and quite savage tribes. Arabs are not known for being the most civilized of all people. During WWI the way they treated captured Ottoman soldiers and officers war very scary (an that’s the least I can say). So the Quran is saying “Try diplomacy first, honor your treaties if you have one, then show absolutely no mercy, do what you have to do to subdue them all”. There is nothing “unspiritual” about this. That’s just the “realistic” approach of the Quran. It says that there are some realities in this world and sometimes there is only one way to deal with those realities. That’s very different from the Earlier Buddhist or Christian teachings. 3) b) The Arabic word used for “Polytheists” here is “Mushrik”. This term may include people who believe in more than one God. But if you do deeper research into it (and I did). It actually means idolatrists. Idolatry is not just the worship of objects that represent the Gods of Polytheist religions. It means you create an object of this world to represent the one true God. “Shirk” or Idolatry is a theme that is also mentioned in the stories about the lives of the Prophet Abraham. To make it simple: If you have one interpretation of Truth and you are claiming that this is the only possible interpretation of Truth and if you are wrong about it, this means you are committing the error of “shirk”. To be more open and precise: God is usually seen as this entity that is present within each and every one of us. If someone is using religious texts that were originally intended to provide a guideline to all of us to uncover this reality within ourselves, and using it to create an oppressive / tyrannical regime that is based on the misinterpretation of these religious texts and the distortion of the meanings of these texts, this is more an act of “shirk” and makes you a “mushrik” actually. (If I am understanding the issue correctly).
This is just to say that I don’t have a problem with the shamans of Papua New Guinea or the Voodun Priestesses of New-Orleans. There are much more serious issues here that have to do with these “Musfidun” forces that are simply a part of our reality in the age in which we are living. The message here is “Do not underestimate the vengeance of the Ego”. That’s how powerful the fear based self is. Grown-up men who are governing a once powerful and proud nation are reduced to torturing online music broadcasting young men to maintain their own asses.
