First there is this famous statement:
“That is why We ordained for the Children of Israel that whoever takes a life—unless as a punishment for murder or mischief in the land—it will be as if they killed all of humanity; and whoever saves a life, it will be as if they saved all of humanity.1”

They do, it's their justification. The Great Western Satan does murder and mischief in the land.

I think this has to do with the early days of Islam when the Prophet and his believers were trying to maintain themselves among rather savage tribes who were very hostile to his beliefs and his ways of doing things.

They were trying to maintain -their- savage ways as they subjugated and murdered the other savage tribes around them. This notion that you have and spend the majority of your posts ballooning here is nothing more or less than the idea that the people in your magic book didn't mean what they said, weren't who they were. To whitewash them so that the character produced is closer to your more delicate and modern sensibilities. The set of people "sowing chaos in the land" was a single circle on a venn diagram with the people who wouldn't bow before them and their god. Anyone who did otherwise was by default and alleged divine decree going against the will of god and all exhortations to violence were thusly justified. This is why islam so routinely manifests itself as an oppressive theocratic regime.
