The fact that Lucy went so quickly was a blessing (because we didn't have to make that awful decision) and a curse (because we had no time to prepare). Less than an hour separated a vibrant, happy dog and one that was gone.

No wonder you're checking them like that. It was almost like that for Cooper, he seemed fine the day before, and had trouble walking the next morning and was dead before noon, though he was able to make it to his favorite shady spot in the corner of the yard first. I thought he was starting to get better and was bringing him some water so he could rest, it was just a few minutes later but he was gone.

He's why Finnigan is half the size, I might have gotten Cooper to the animal hospital (it was a Sunday so his vet wasn't open) in time if I could have carried him and put him in the car. But it was probably too late, thirteen is really old for a dog over a hundred pounds.
The dogs we have and have had are prone to heart issues.  My first one died in his sleep at the age of six.  Broke my heart.  Karm made it to 11 before her heart gave out and we had to have her put down.  So far, knock on wood, the other three aren't displaying heart issues.

I bet I watched Karm breathe for 5 years.   The cat's getting up there in years and I have been watching him too.
