Christian sects such as the Bogomils and the Cathars, professed reincarnation and other gnostic beliefs. This had been declared heretical since 553 A.D. by the church because it was believed to contradict the doctrine of "corporeal resurrection" and undermine the need for Christ's "redemptive sacrifices".
Not altogether surprisingly the Albigensian Crusade was launched against them by Pope Innocent III.
