Arguable, but the difference between civic and ethnic nationalism was then invoked to say that..no, a nation is a not a specific people with a shared heritage or a rightful class based claim to national future or..for that matter, growing space in someone else's country. We came from many places, many people. E pluribus unum. America was an idea. America was for everybody. We're bound together by principle, rather than blood. By our shared allegiance to and maintenance of those very institutions which granted us all this wonderful opportunity in the first place.
Ethnic nationalism and civic nationalism cannot easily coexist. Not for nothing, but the trump regime sold one thing, and delivers the other...so I think tugging at american nationalism is one of the few off ramps for maga cultists.
