I suspect part of the problem is the ick factor, the same as with transexuals and such. It's a visceral revulsion that makes them want to not have to deal with those people. Which raises the question of how that reaction became conditioned in the first place. Maybe it has to do with sex period, and they're able to sublimate any squeamishness about their own sexual practices.
I agree that male homosexuality is more reviled than female homosexuality. The explanation for ANE societies is that a male participating in a homosexual act as a catcher was seen as abdicating the male's natural role and perverting his manhood. I think in the same sense, male homosexuality, especially among younger males, is seen as an example of feminization, and young males especially are threatened by female power and have insecurity about their own manhood which they externalize by trying to deny the existence of the feminine male.
