Anybody have experience with the wide range of Bidet products, positive or negative?
Is there a cultural barrier to adoption because it's tickling the starfish?
Does the increase in water use out weigh the paper use? I still use a swipe of paper to check the efficacy of the water jet. Until they come with camera's I can Bluetooth to my phone I have no other way of being sure all the nasty be gone.
Would you install a bidet with a camera and app for your phone? Would you trust Apple and the rest of big tech with live video of your starfish?
This issue has hygiene, environmental impact, plumbing and privacy impacts! Everybody poops. This might be my greatest contribution to this site, community and human civilization.
They've been standard here in Japan for close to 30 years now. I can't remember the last time I saw a toilet without a bidet thingy. They are universally called "washlets" here.
There's always a button to clean your bottom, and another button to do a woman's front bottom, and then various options, depending on the model. You can vary the water pressure, warm the water, have it move around, etc.
Last year when we were house shopping we were discussing an older place that needed renovations, and the realtor said that whatever work we had done they would include the latest model washlet for free, since they're pretty much considered indispensable.
They reduce paper use and of course in Japan there's a little sink on the top of the toilet, so after you wash your hands the water goes into the tank for the next use. It's all very efficient.
I've only ever thought of them as hygienic, but now that you mention it I suspect people who enjoy that kind of play-time would be glad for the technology. It's well-known that people in Japan are unashamed about pretty much any kind of kink (or should I just say... variety). Now I wonder if part of the reason washlets caught on so fast is because of people who enjoy that kind of fun. The culture is largely still in the "don't ask don't tell" stage, though, so I have never discussed this with anyone.
