My sis and I just had a real nice chat about Bob Ross, the "happy accidents" PBS host and painter. We'd both only recently learned that Ross earlier in life had been a USAF drill instructor. Now, I've been through AF Basic, and by the time I was in BMT they were more-regulated. My sis tells me she read that Ross had to spend some time deprogramming himself.
On the other hand, one of my DIs had lost a stripe to two for beating a trainee (this after the tightened regs), but by Desert Storm he'd returned to his normal AFSC and was passing through my base in Spain while he was headed ... somewhere. I ran into him by chance at the enlisted club, bought him a beer, and we had the coolest little hour convo.
So tonight I'm wondering how it was that Ross got so far along that he had to deprogram, and SSgt Gibson could keep those two personae so efficiently walled-off.
Anyway, it was very enjoyable.
