Indeed. Here's what gets me, though. The commanders already knew that they couldn't trust reports and inventories from a system intentionally designed for corruption. In fact, each one of russias three key assumptions had been read for filth by russian planners before they pulled the trigger. They just didn't see a world where all three were simultaneously bullshit.
The world we live in, as it so happened. Part of me thinks these guys must have believed...in a way that probably sounds absurd to your average joe but completely on brand for brass to joe joes...that the war would provide them an oppurtunity to reform their fucked up gang of window thieves and toilet enthusiasts. A perfect storm domestically - since russians wives and mothers seemed to believe that this generation of sons and husbands weren't worth as much as their ever decreasing and now totally stalled death benefits.
