The fact that the government had to kill at least 7,000 citizens to quell their protests rater undercuts this point of yours. "Brainwashed" people don't take to the streets. That makes Iran very different from Germany and Japan.

Well, I am not so sure about that. We still live in 2026 not in 1936. My grandparent’s generation (the generation before baby boomer) would often say things like “Of course it is true, it’s written in the newspaper” or “of course it is true, how can you doubt the prime minister”.

Again: We (the Gen X) are the first generation with access to the internet. We are also the first generation with access to international TV stations etc. So the control of information was stricter in the past. Today, probably 90% of Russian know that everything the Kremlin says is BS. But they probably choose to act like they believe it because things are much easier that way.
Still: there has to be 10 to 30 % of Iranians who (still) believe in this political Islamic state. They would go to the grave for it and they wouldn’t simply run away like Saddam’s or Kaddafi’s soldiers.

So the situation is quite unique here. This doesn’t change the fact that some 200,000 people gathered in Munich today to support the pro-democracy movement in Iran.

What is happening is this: The overall energy of the planet is changing. Many people are less tolerant for things like the invasion of Ukraine by Russia or the existence of a highly repressive, misogynic regime in a part of the world they probably will not even travel to once before they die. We are more sensitive on environmental issues too. I think the number of people who worry about the melting of the glaciers in Greenland must be higher than the number who are scared of increased Chinese and Russian activity in that region.

/And that’s where these populist politicians are getting it wrong. If the likes of Trump knew and understood what was coming they wouldn’t have sent ICE agents to Minnesota in the first place.
