Thing is, the republican guard didn't fare any better on a unit by unit analysis - and that disparity in forces was a part of the soviet battle doctrine, not a specific failure of iraqi command. The entire premise of the deep battle doctrine was to exhaust the enemy with disposable troops over long manouvers, fixing their forces, and then hammering them with the core of well trained well equipped shock troops in a war of attrition. That's russias play in ukraine too. It's not a bad plan, except for the fact that a networked force acts in every part as though it were the shock troop component of the deep battle doctrine - and so that disparity the doctrine is supposed to create and then exploit never occurs. The attrition battles don't have a chance to begin. Collapse, instead, becomes the name of the game.
