For some reason this quote popped into my head - "Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?".
Also yeah, prayer is fucking useless. It's delusional to think it's going to change anything. Comfort maybe but you can get that from drugs (which actually does a better job). People are most efficient and strong when they see problems they're going to face and prepare for it by using all USEFUL means. Not being on your knees with your eyes shut mumbling to your imaginary friend. If we did that every time we had a problem mankind would of gone extinct fucking centuries ago.
Good point about the whole 'can god stop the tornado?' thing. If he can but doesn't then he is malevolent. He'd be committing the immoral of inaction. If he can't then he isn't all powerful. Both are good reasons to question god. Why worship a being like that?

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan
Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.
Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.
You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.
