The Pope and his minions actually do believe that IN PRACTICE Canon law trumps civil law.
Once one realises that, it is easy to see how child abuse other crimes seem to have been endemic in the church for about 1500 years. In Europe the church was formally above the law,for centuries. The civil authoriities could NOT try/punish a cleric for any crime whatsoever.
TRIVIA: Larry Flint once published a cartoon in Hustler showing Jerry Falwell having sex with his mother in an outhouse. Jerry sued and lost.
