This is not the reason most people believe, but it's what drives them to believe and is the biggest factor. They have so much emotional attachments that causes them to really want to believe which causes them to become severly bias towards their religion, unable to see the flaws of their thinking. Been there, done that.
They believe mostly due to their want to believe, which is due to many factors, but mostly out of attachment to family and parents.
Not every religion teaches hell - yet we find people believing in the religions of their parents.

It also often shows they are arrogant, aggressive and ignorant, with no respect for the feelings or rights of others .
No, think about it, people whom preach to others are trying to help others from their point of view. For example, take Christians for example. A Christians whom doesn't care about non-christians is indifferent towards them not being saved and going to hell. A Christian whom cares about saving others, cares about them.
A Muslim trying to 'guide' a Christian believes he is guiding a person towards the straight path. Consider the outcome of the person life is everlasting, either in punishment or heaven, then they would be doing a huge favor towards the person.
So you have to look at this from their perspective, not simply yours.
