Well, considering that game update range is 288 blocks in diameter (centered on the player or on groups of players) it's unlikely that you'd ever want anything to span more than 1km if you can condense it (ignoring a large 1-1 scale city model - or, a 1-1 Replica of the Enterprise...lol). Redstone behaviour is limited to update ranges without gaming the mechanics and even so, the larger the world the more space the map takes. Particularly passive mobs which do not despawn on the regular timer outside of update range. The game actually keeps those little buggers loaded in a sort of standby mode. The reason all of this is important (and map size restrictions are often imposed on servers) is that it's fairly easy for someone to intentionally crash a server- if they were so inclined. Imagine 4 people positioned to keep a 1km chunk loaded with a piston based conveyer powering a massive 1km2 mob spawner. RIP server. Playability over unlimited empty map space ftw.
