The laughable part is that until a century ago, everyone thought the universe always existed as-is because God was eternal.
Then when we learn the universe had a beginning, we say that makes sense because God had to create it.
Universe has no beginning? God is eternal, this proves God has always existed.
Universe has a beginning? God is eternal, God is the only thing that could create the universe.
Next theory? The universe is a projection? Aha! This proves God exists because only an omnipotent being could create a projection like our universe!
For some reason all scientific theories which are contradictory imply the same thing to theists they were told by their stumped parents: God did it.

"Listen, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government! Supreme executive power derives from a mandate by the masses, not some farcical aquatic ceremony!"
