Don't worry. All countries suffer that to some extent. Some of the eastern european countries that have been released from Soviet oversight are very nationalistic. Britain went through the same exeptionalist period in the 19th century when London was the centre of the world with the empress Victoria at the helm, and "Johnny foreigner" was an inferior beast. Those times are long past as they will be for USA eventually.
I don't know why the USA is so overtly religious since I am not aware of any similar phenomenon in previous countries in a similar position. The best explaination I have heard is that during the cold war religiosity was a way of distinguishing the US from the atheist USSR, and so got a foothold for this reason. Umm . . . maybe . . . but I am not completely convinced.
