If he really wants to talk about it in private, that's great! It's always an opportunity to find out how your friend feels about some of the big questions in life (e.g. is there a meaning etc.). I love having that kind of conversation with my friends because I really get to know what they think, why they think it & how they feel about it. Frame your comment as a chance to share some of those deeper thoughts/feelings.
