I have got to say that I ponder that question many times myself. I tend to believe that many people who say they are christian don't give it too much thought outside of church. It seems to me that people take exactly what they want from religion--no more--no less.
As for scientists, doctors, etc--I can't imagine how they could get through their schooling and not question--but then, most of us were taught at one time or another that we are not to question the mysteries of God.
Since no one can know for sure, maybe some are just too afraid to doubt or question. Just in case there is a hell---well--
I know one intelligent person who calls herself a christian, yet she believes in reincarnation. Talk about covering all the bases. She also wondered how I could not worry where my soul went after I died.
Somehow, I don't think intellect has much to do with christianity.
