There is another side to that, how many relationships have been destroyed, by things festering underneath the surface which cannot be spoken of. Many of my gay friends would tell you life is much better when they come out than when they had to hide their nature, even though it will inevitably cause complications.
Maybe the culture of acceptance is easier in Britain, Europe, etc than in the Midwest USA but that could be because, we have got used to people standing up against the rest of the community, somebody has to stand up to them, or is the idea of leaving things to others now so deep in the culture, nobody should take a risk?
