I never thought I'd say I'm grateful I never learned perl.

Trust me, you don't know how grateful you should be. Part of my job involves maintaining some legacy crap written in Perl, apparently designed and coded by crack-smoking baboons. I've been working on redesigning and recoding the application framework in Java in my spare time so that someday I will never, ever have to gaze upon another line of that abomination of a programming language (*).

Do the world a favor and use something else. No, use anything else.

(*) Perl is actually really good for what it was designed for: reports and text manipulation. Yeah, unfortunately, that's only a fraction of what it's used for.
