Isn't ethnic lineage one of your specialties? With the kurds and all that jazz in Turkey?
Both Kalmuks and Tatars are as brothers to me, with Tatars being the name of my tribe amongst Turks. This is due to the father's tribal association being taken more into consideration. Like, for example, my mother's side is of the Kurtoghlu Turcomans, while my father's side is of the crimean Tatars.
If his father were to be a Tatar, or revese, a Kalmuk, he would probably identify himself with the tribe of his father, even though he would know and cherish the tribe of his mother, just as I do.
This is same in russia for those who do not marry from those who we deem as associated people, like for example, a Tatar-Russian marriage would produce a child that would identify himself as a Tatar, although I'd still discourage my kinsmen from marrying those of foreign blood.
I was just trying to make a point, of whether he was of Tatar or Kalmuk ancestry. If he were of any of these, he would have been properly named, and Kalmuks with their Boryat roots and lamaist beliefs ought to take naming a lot more seriously.
I was just trying to figure out what kind of a Buryat of Tatar his father might have been.
I don't know, with him being a serf..I just have to guess that he probably was of christian heritage and had adopted christian customs and names(due to serfdom).
In short, no need to get agitated so quickly, friend. I mean no offense to anyone.
