I agree that the religious reasons are nonsense. I also think that the idea of everyone (including women and other beasts of burden) having one day of rest in seven is a good one. Tomb builders in the Valley Of The Kings worked a ten day week.
The Aussie attitude to days off is reflected in this: New Zealand is know as "'the land of the long white cloud". Australia is known as "the land of the long weekend."
