Sure, but unfortunately not all parents' love is unconditional. They might love him/her as long as he/she believes in their god of choice, but can you guarantee that they won't go apeshit once they find out that their beloved son/daughter is an atheist? Actually, yes, he/she has a choice. It's no more dishonest to keep this from his/her parents than to tell them and potentially make the whole family suffer.
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human.
