1a : a member of any of a number of peoples of ancient southwestern Asia including the Akkadians, Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Arabs
In the current American lexicon, they are never referring to Akkadians, Phoenicians, or Arabs. They only use the word to refer to Hebrews, and not just the actual hebrews that inhabited that tiny bronze age kingdom, but more so to those who make the ancestral claim despite the obvious genetic differences. In the American lexicon the two are perfect synonyms.
Just as we don't break down races to tiny villages, we wouldn't normally have the term "Semite" if it weren't for the religious connotations.
No one is really anti-sematic, we're anti jew. The only reason we are anti jew is because we don't agree with the jewish tenants and behaviors.
Take "god" out of the equation and there is no such thing as a jew.
