The article did not specify which kinds of miracles people believe in. It was "miracles from God", which can be pretty much anything at all and usually is.

Enough people were fooled by lies, nonsense and ignorance that we have 2000 years of a religion founded on it. Call me nuts but I do not think that could happen today.
