how do you tell the difference between a false prophet and a 'genuinely' god-powered one with 'real' revelati

I was tempted to put this in the Muslim forum as there could be some cross interest but then I thought no it could get confused so I settled for here.
The answer as outlined in the Bible is mixed and more worrying suggests that at the very time we need to be most able to spot the false prophet is the very time we will be least able to. In honesty this was the very first time I had to face the fact that my faith was my own responsability and being part of a church was no protection when I has read the Bible from start to finish as a 12 yr old skipping over the begats and got to these areas of the Bible.
Matthew 24:24-25, "For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before.
Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved [Thessalonians 2:9-10].
Then I saw another beast, coming out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a dragon. He exercised all the authority of the first beast on his behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. And he performed great and miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in full view of men. Because of the signs he was given power to do on behalf of the first beast, he deceived the inhabitants of the earth (Revelation 13:11-14).
this was the then in someways the very thing that allowed/forced me to question everything I was taught aware that at some point even the people we should be able to trust may be led astray to.
Even now the Issue is still one of the big 3 questions of my life in my faith but never my belief in GOD.
So although there I'm not making any statements to answer the Question rather i'm throwing out a starting position to see how the thread develops
