Christians are expected to literally take up their cross and follow Christ. They are expected to give all that they have over to the Lord. That means making sacrifices. Jesus himself appears before Saul and confronts him on the road to Domascus, he blinds Saul and sends him away. Then he sends Ananias to heal and baptize him, he tells Ananias (Acts 9:15-16): "Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name."
