Religion is a broad word.
But yes, I believe some people's brains need a theistic, or at least an agnostic view to obtain a productive lifestyle.
For a lot of people in the world, it's faith or drugs. You either delusionally believe everything will be better or delusionally believe it is better.
Most people naturally believe this anyway. They visualise the future for themselves or their current situation as a positive thing without any evidence.
Putting hypomanic faith in the universe, or karma, or a god of some description is the ultimate experience of enlightenment or empowerment for some minds, more-so than any drug.
