Alternately, one can fill a barrel with gas, and have some heavy machinery drop a flame into it. I got to experience that explosion from a mile away... very sexy fire pillar.
Explosions are fun when controlled, and concerning when one isn't expecting them. Or exciting, if you're far enough away and there's nothing you care about near it
