White people like feeling safe.
Here again to invoke our natives, a horrific practice of valuing captives in battle as gift fodder to increase the group spiritual power of a tribe also offered a saftey net to warriors (ensuring that they could be captured, gifted- and re-enter the fray on the other side - as well as captured women and children being provided some measure of safety by the same. It's an amusing practice because at the heart of it gifting is assigned as a spiritual currency, so gifts are exceedingly selfish...and then captives can be gifted, which is horrendous on the one hand but better than death on the other...it gets really fun.)
