Nice Eilonnwy, and might i add:
Science cannot thrive on anything less than the best possible assumption. Science is measured by the progress it makes and the developments it delivers, it is impossible for science to develop on falsities and the people who fund science depend absolutely on these developments for their incomes and profits and the scientists will earn funding with nothing but the most accurate possible descriptions. Science cannot survive on ideology like religion can, it demands results for profits which absolutely cannot happen unless you are dealing with the truth.
Evolution is the foundation for modern biology, that includes a great deal of medicine that saves lives every day, such results would be absolutely impossible with falsities and bad science is absolutely non-beneficial. It is overwhelmingly in the best interest of science and all scientists to be as close to the truth as possible.
Examine for one minuet if you will, the progress that has come from science compared to religion over the last 2000 years; it is overwhelmingly in favor of science! From medicine to electronics to machines to clothing, food production, housing, communication, information and the like, science has given us more in the last 200 years than religion has in 2000 years.
Science benefits from the truth alone, fiction has absolutely no benefit in developing technology.
