If after repeated warnings a member can't follow your rules, you do what you think is best.
My "vote" though would be a ban for a period of time or a warning, especially (as in this case) for a long term member.
He was warned, and if you were aware of his long history of behavior on other sites (going back to at least 1996), you might have a different perspective on the value of a temporary ban (which is a tool we have at our disposal).
