We are free from the law as our only means or way to righteousness, and we are free to worship God to our fullest potential. The only thing we can't do is live for self.
Why design human beings to be selfish and individualistic and then punish us for acting according to that design?
The idea that free will is supposed to foster a pure relationship with God runs into a fatal flaw immediately: there is a punishment/reward system in place. If God's desire was to weed out those who didn't truly want to be his best buds 4eva, with all their hearts, then there would be no reward offered for saying yes and no punishment handed down for saying no. The promise of eternity in paradise, free from all the bad things on earth, is an incentive which appeals to the selfish desire to get good results. The promise of gruesome and unending torture is disincentive which appeals to the selfish desire to avoid negative results. Both promises taint the purity of the relationship, and it is human nature to take both promises into account when considering the whole Christian thing. This is a problem that the inventors of the Christ story apparently failed to realize, they made the pure and unconditional love for Christ demanded by scripture impossible by broadening its appeal.
