From all of history, I know of only one exception to this above rule. George Washington had his faults, but he did get our democracy off to a good start by using the powers of the President with restraint and establishing the precedent of only-two-terms.

The 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951 which limits the president to two terms. Unless you're saying that Washington proposed the idea, but it didn't take hold until long after he was dead.
