It has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the entire US, the lowest household median income in the entire US, it is the most religious state in the US, ranked lowest for health-care, receives the second-highest amount of federal assistance [even though it is largely a republican state...ha ha haaa oh my fuckin' goodness the irony...], and has consistently ranked THE LOWEST in the US for test scores for math and science.
I'm not saying all people from Mississippi are dumb as rocks...
...I'm just saying the search for an intelligent person from Mississippi is ongoing and, so far, fruitless. '_'
The South was devastated after the Civil War for a century. Religion is the opiate of the masses. The South, oddly enough, wasn't all that religious before the Civil War. Most half way educated Southerners looked upon the preachers with a lot of distrust.
After the North obliterated the South and left it in utter desolation the survivors turned to religion. Because while their life in this world was nothing but pain and hardship and crushing poverty, they had the comforting fairytale of a better existence in the hereafter.
Religion fucks up your thinking. And that's why the South has it's disfunctions. Because of the religious solace that is the legacy of a devastating war that destroyed damn near everything, killed 1/4th of the military aged men, maimed another 1/4th of the military aged men, destroyed any burgeoning industry, wiped out half the livestock, and then imposed military presence on them and have mocked them continually ever since.
The Southern people are great people. They're kind, and they are intelligent. They're genuine in a genteel way where the Northern Americans are pretty freaking rude and seem generally unhappy and grumpy to most everyone. We're just trying to break away from this religious grip that we succured on for generations to escape our own personal hell on Earth.
