Can you Name a Single Successful Government Program?

I'd really like to see Koolaid answer this one.

Problem: Large numbers of miners are being killed in mining accidents.

Cause: Mining companies value profit more than life and refuse to implement basic safety standards.

Solution: Government institutes a program that requires mining companies to implement basic safety standards.

Effect: Immediate and large drop in the number of miners killed in work related accidents.

Oh but surely the free market will find its own way without government interference when it comes to safety standards! Surely it doesn't value the rise of profit margins over all else??

I would like a certain someone (hint: He's the OP) to name a single wide-scale endeavor by private concerns that have been for the good of their workers without a profit motive, government-mandated law, and/or tax incentive to do so.
