If you are talking about the OT (sigh) ancient man is not a good judge of character.
Jesus on the other hand says (after our death): "Amen I say to you... whoever comes to the light, will come to me."
Pretty simple? We all have a choice. The big problem is with those who don't believe!
THEY WON'T GO TO HIM!
First of all, no I hate abusive parents.
Not talking about the OT but the entire set up of heaven earth and hell. If a dad tells his children, if you don't say you love me and live with me forever, I'll throw you in a burning pit.
Is he abusive or is he Christlike?
Thing is you're using a human mind to decipher God's. Not possible.
We have Jesus' words. God is a "loving and merciful" one.
We have a choice. And by Jesus' own admission, even after our death.
Going "towards the light" is to show our love for Him, and the promise of an eternal life!
Some won't go to the light. And for what reasons? Probably one is the reason you talk about. That He is a punishing, and hateful God.
Well, then you would get what [you believe] is truth in that case!
Quis ut Deus?
